Self-Portrait 01 - Dog Sculpture

This work presents a self-portrait embodied in the form of a bulldog. Seated and facing the viewer, the figure meets our gaze with an expression that is at once wry, faintly menacing, and unexpectedly welcoming. Its paws rest neatly atop one another, suggesting patience -- perhaps anticipation, perhaps calculation. The ambiguity of the dog’s intention remains unresolved, inviting the viewer to project their own interpretations onto its steady stare.

By adopting the physical form of an animal incapable of verbal communication, the work foregrounds the fragility and limits of expression. The bulldog becomes a surrogate through which the tension between interior thought and outward appearance is examined. In the absence of speech, meaning is carried entirely by posture and gaze, underscoring how easily expressions can mislead, conceal, or betray what lies beneath.

The metallic finish intensifies this psychological dynamic. Its reflective surface amplifies contrasts of light and shadow, producing a pronounced chiaroscuro effect that heightens drama and emotional charge. Illumination glances sharply across the form while shadows deepen its contours, reinforcing the work’s atmosphere of uncertainty and quiet confrontation.
